Two very special friends welcomed their second beautiful daughter into the world a few days ago. Laying eyes on this lovely baby girl, with a head full of thick – black hair, brought tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.
In much the same way, this week, tears of joy will be experienced by millions across the globe as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Birthdays call for a celebration, a time to treat ourselves special and thank God for the day we were born. And –– because of Christ’s sacrifice over 2000 years ago, we have the privilege of adding a second birthday celebration to our calendar – the day of our spiritual re-birth.
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature;
the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”
2 Corinthians 5:17
God through His extravagant compassion for you and me, became fully human, led a humble life, and at an early age, became the greatest Bible teacher to ever walk the earth. At about thirty years old, Jesus revealed His true identity, He was –– and is, God in the flesh. Kissed by Judas, Jesus knew the sting of betrayal. He experienced the powerlessness of abuse –– having been beaten, crucified and buried by the very people He came to save. But praise God! Jesus conquered death and was resurrected from the grave, conquering death for all eternity!
Because of Christ’s willing sacrifice and victory over death, you and I have the privilege to choose life. A life, while not free of difficulty or struggles, that will find comfort in the midst of crisis, trust in the midst of uncertainty, and hope in the midst of all circumstances.
As we celebrate Easter this week, let’s turn our focus on God’s grace-filled sacrifice that, once and for all, paid the price for our sin and provided us the opportunity to be re-born into the kingdom of God.
What does Easter mean to you?
